Grinding Teeth While Sleep

Grinding Teeth While Sleep

Grinding teeth while sleepDo you know the exact medical term for grinding teeth? Grinding our teeth can come with a complicated series of issues, the term “bruxism” is the official medical word. The exact terminology happens to cover the entire base of what happens when grinding your teeth becomes routine in your life. There are a number of primary reasons and solutions for why anyone grinds their teeth, we will discuss this further below. However, do not be alarmed, always check in with your orthodontist if you notice pain, numbness, or red gums around the teeth.

One common association for grinding teeth while sleep is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder. Individuals with GERD may experience acid reflux, which can lead to the erosion of tooth enamel and increase the likelihood of teeth grinding during sleep.

What has been found out about ADHD is that different medications for this mood disorder have been linked to bruxism. People with ADHD may exhibit teeth grinding as a symptom of their condition, especially during stressful or hyperactive episodes.

Night terrors or nightmares can trigger bruxism in some individuals. The emotional turmoil and anxiety associated with these nighttime experiences may manifest as teeth-grinding while asleep.

Consuming excessive caffeine or alcohol can exacerbate bruxism. You can expect these substances to disrupt sleep patterns, leading to more frequent grinding episodes, especially if consumed close to bedtime.

Smoking is yet another potential contributor to bruxism. Smoking has become one of the more common reasons for teeth grinding. This could be because an individual is receiving too much nicotine in a  single day. This would act similar to someone who has had 8 cups of coffee in a day. This is too harsh on the body and can cause reactions such as teeth grinding, which results in the loss of sleep. No one what to lose sleep.

Certain medications designed to stabilize mood, such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, may list bruxism as a side effect. Be sure to look up if any medication you are taking could be the cause. Anyone experiencing this should bring this to the attention of your doctor to combat this issue.

Clenching teeth during sleep

Common elements partner together while sleep occurs. Wether these issues are distressing dreams, sleep paralysis, anxiety before falling asleep, and an unsteady environment. Not many know about the worldwide issue of grinding teeth, and how it affects 10% of the population.  Grinding teeth as someone falls asleep can lead to teeth fractures, gum pain or bleeding, damaged enamel, earache, tight jaw muscles, and sensitivity.

Most individuals will have an inkling if they are grinding their teeth at night, by having a family member notice an audible sound when the person is asleep. This sound can be clacking, popping, crunching, or scrapping.

If someone suspects that they are grinding their teeth, they are unsure. Booking an appointment to get a checkup would be your best option. This will also ensure to an individual that no damage has occurred. If so, a variety of options to help stop teeth grinding is available.

How to prevent teeth clenching

Typically, teeth clenching is a result of not relaxing. Staying calm while enjoying a warm bath or a good movie. This is more anxiety-induced, and massaging the jaw would be needed at least twice a day.

Pay attention to when you’re sitting and looking at your phone if you’re jaw is clenching more than normal. This would include sore muscles and the feeling of the muscles being tight. If so, then this is a good indicator that grinding your teeth in your sleep is, in fact, happening.

Fix grinding teeth

Oddly enough there are many ways to prevent and fix grinding teeth at home. That is if you have recently started grinding your teeth.

Have you recently changed an aspect of your lifestyle? This can include not enough exercise, not getting enough sleep, and finding ways to relax before bed. From the National Institute of Health, there were three studies evaluated to show that stress did elevate the chances of grinding teeth while sleep. The medical article even states that patients have shared that they experienced more anxiety and depression after they had been grinding their teeth for a few months.

If you are wondering what orthodontic procedure can fix grinding teeth, that would be either getting Invisalign or braces. Some people don’t know that their jaw is misaligned and this can be causing an even worse cause of bruxism. In extreme cases, oral surgery will be needed.

Sleeping mouthguard for braces

Buying a mouthguard will be the best solution if you are experiencing painful teeth grinding but have not sustained damage to the teeth. This will be one of the first fixes an individual can look for, and buy. Sleeping a mouthguard for braces will be the way to prevent extreme pain or fracturing a tooth.

How can one determine the presence of an overbite? You might have found yourself searching on Google with queries like “Do I have a overbite?” or “No overbite teeth.” If you have concerns about a potential misalignment, is there a likelihood that you indeed have an overbite? Yet, can this only be definitively ascertained by consulting with an orthodontist? Yes, it can! Once you schedule or book an appointment with your orthodontist, the orthodontist can see if the lips are being affected by the front teeth, progressing in a forward position of alignment. This forward alignment will cause the look of fuller or plump lips, typically the top lip will overshadow the bottom lip more.

Overbite Lips

How can you tell if your lips are affected by your overbite? One of the most noticeable characteristics that can develop from overbite lips is a fuller top lip. This may be a much fuller top lip (easily noticeable from the bottom lip), or if you take a photo of your side profile (either left or right) you can see a fuller, protruding top lip. One of the most asked questions, is will my lips look different after I have braces to fix my overbite? The answer is yes, there will be an obvious change as this issue is corrected.

overbite lips

Do I Have A Overbite

There are a series of percentages available, in the form of photos to show if someone has a bad overbite. When you notice that your bottom teeth are completely covered by your top teeth, that is deemed a deep extreme overbite. This is a way to keep in mind if you periodically notice that your top bite is progressively covering your lower teeth, then you can actually see that your overbite is getting worse.

Do I Need Braces for an Overbite

Braces are indeed needed and highly suggested. It does come down to the individual who will want to go through having braces, and we do have a few informational articles about traditional braces. There is a series of consultations that will guarantee the right path to fix overbite lips. Have you been asking yourself these questions:

  • One of the most apparent signs is a change in the alignment of my upper and lower teeth. What if my upper teeth are starting to overlap my lower teeth more than they used to?
  • I’m starting to experience discomfort and pain, especially in the jaw area, is this a sign of worsening overbite?
  • I’ve noticed that it has become harder to chew food properly. It’s a bit like my bite isn’t functioning as effectively as it should?
  • I’ve noticed that my speech is being affected as well.
  • I’ve noticed changes in the appearance of my lips and face. My upper lip is more prominent and my lower lip is pushed back, is my overbite becoming more pronounced?

If you’re concerned that your overbite is getting worse, it’s essential to consult with an orthodontist. They need to assess your condition, provide personalized advice, and discuss potential treatment options to address the issue and prevent further progression.

No Overbite Teeth

There can be physical facial elements that may make a person think that they have an overbite… when they do not. This can be an easy self-diagnosis that can be answered by an orthodontist. An orthodontist will be able to tell you, if you have overbite lips or not.  Determining if you have no overbite lip, meaning that your lips are not affected by an overbite, can be assessed through visual observation and consulting with a dental or orthodontic professional. Here’s how you can go about it:

  1. Visual Observation:
  •    Look in a mirror and relax your facial muscles.
  •    Gently close your mouth without straining or consciously adjusting your lip position.
  •    Observe the alignment of your upper and lower teeth. If they appear to be relatively level and your lips meet comfortably without any significant upper or lower lip protrusion, you may not have a noticeable overbite lip.
  1. Consult a Orthodontic Professional:
  •    If you have concerns about your bite or the appearance of your lips, it’s advisable to schedule a consultation with a dentist or orthodontist.
  •    They can perform a comprehensive examination, including assessing your dental alignment, bite, and lip position.
  •    Based on the orthodontic evaluation, they can provide you with a more precise diagnosis and recommend any necessary treatments or interventions to address any issues related to your lip and bite alignment.

Keep in mind that a slight overbite is common and may not significantly affect the appearance of your lips. However, if you have concerns or believe that your lips are affected by an overbite, it’s best to seek professional guidance for a thorough evaluation and appropriate guidance.

However, they come with certain dietary restrictions to ensure that the braces remain intact and effective. Among the most frequently asked questions is whether or not you can indulge in candy while wearing braces. In this article, we’ll explore the dos and don’ts of enjoying candy when you have braces.

What Fruity Candy Can You Eat With Braces?

When you have braces, you don’t have to give up all types of candy. During the first week of having braces, it’s essential to focus on soft, easy-to-chew foods that won’t put too much pressure on your newly adjusted dental appliances. In fact, there are plenty of fruity options that are braces-friendly. Some of these include:

Soft Fruit Chews: Many soft fruit candies are safe for braces. They are typically easy to chew and won’t damage your braces.

Jellybeans: As long as you avoid the hard ones and stick to the softer, chewable jellybeans, you can enjoy their fruity goodness without worry.

Fruit Gummies: Gummy candies with a fruity flavor are often safe to eat with braces. Just be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly afterward to remove any sticky residue.

Chocolate-Covered Fruits: Chocolate-dipped strawberries or bananas are usually fine for those with braces. The chocolate coating adds a sweet twist to your fruit treat.

What Candy Can You Not Eat With Braces?

When you have braces, there are certain foods you should avoid to prevent damage to your orthodontic appliances and to maintain good oral hygiene. While there are candies you can enjoy with braces, there are also several types you should avoid altogether:

Hard Candy: Hard candies like lollipops and jawbreakers can break or damage braces, leading to costly repairs and extended treatment time.

Sticky Candy: Chewy, sticky candies such as taffy and caramel can become lodged in your braces, leading to hygiene issues and the risk of cavities.

Sticky Candy

Crunchy Candy: Anything hard and crunchy, like peanut brittle or toffee, should be off-limits, as it can cause brackets to pop off or wires to bend.

Crunchy Candy

Candy with Nuts: Candies containing nuts, like nougat-filled treats, should be avoided, as they can damage braces.

You can still enjoy candy when you have braces, but you must be selective and cautious. Opt for soft, non-sticky, and braces-friendly options to satisfy your sweet tooth without risking damage to your orthodontic appliance. Additionally, maintain proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to ensure your braces treatment progresses smoothly. Always consult your orthodontist for personalized advice on what foods are suitable for your specific case.

What Sour Candy Can You Eat With Braces?

Sour candies are often tempting, but they can be problematic for braces. The high acidity and hardness of some sour candies can potentially harm your braces. However, there are milder options you can try:

Sour Patch Kids: These candies are softer and can be consumed with caution. Just be mindful of the level of sourness.

Sour Gummy Worms: Like Sour Patch Kids, sour gummy worms are relatively soft and less likely to cause damage to your braces.

What Can You Eat with Braces?

While candy is often a popular treat, it’s essential to maintain a balanced diet when you have braces. Softer and healthier alternatives to candy can include:

Yogurt: It’s a great source of calcium and protein, and it’s gentle on braces.

Yogurt

Cheese: Cheese is rich in calcium and doesn’t pose a risk to your braces. It can even help neutralize acids in your mouth.

Cheese

Fruit Smoothies: Blending fruits with yogurt or milk can create a delicious and nutritious treat.

Pudding: Soft, creamy, and braces-friendly.

What Can You Do To Maintain Healthy Oral Hygiene?

Braces require a bit of extra care to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout the orthodontic treatment. When enjoying candy with braces, or any other food, it’s crucial to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Here are some tips to help you keep your teeth and braces in good shape:

Brushing and Flossing

Regular and thorough brushing is even more critical when you have braces. It’s recommended to brush your teeth after every meal, or at least three times a day. Be gentle but thorough to remove food particles from around the brackets and wires. Additionally, using an orthodontic toothbrush can make the task more manageable.

Flossing with braces can be a bit tricky, but it’s essential to clean between your teeth and around the wires. You can use special floss threaders or orthodontic floss to make the process easier.

Mouthwash

Rinsing with an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash can help keep your mouth clean and reduce the risk of cavities. Consult your orthodontist for recommendations on the best mouthwash for your specific needs.

Orthodontic Wax

Braces can sometimes cause irritation or sores in your mouth. Orthodontic wax is a handy tool for covering any sharp or protruding edges of your braces that might be causing discomfort.

 Regular Check-ups

Regular visits to your orthodontist are essential. They can make necessary adjustments to your braces, monitor your progress, and address any issues that might arise.

Dietary Considerations

Apart from candy, there are other foods and beverages you should be cautious about. For example:

  • Popcorn: The hulls can get stuck in your braces or damage them. Opt for the hull-less variety or be very cautious while enjoying popcorn.
  • Nuts: While nuts themselves aren’t off-limits, it’s a good idea to avoid hard, whole nuts. Opt for nut butter or finely chopped nuts if you’re craving them.
  • Carbonated Drinks: Sugary and acidic drinks can contribute to tooth decay and enamel erosion. Water is the best beverage choice, but if you do indulge in a soda, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth.

It’s crucial to remember that the guidelines for eating candy with braces can vary depending on your specific orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist is your best source of information when it comes to dietary recommendations. They can provide personalized advice based on the type of braces you have, the alignment of your teeth, and any other unique considerations.

Why You Should Know About The New Orthodontic Trends for 2022

Self-Care Year: 2022 Orthodontic Trends for a Brighter Smile

What trends are hitting the market for orthodontic in 2022? Since this new year has been deemed the “self-care” year, everyone is looking forward to fixing prior problems or finding ways to improve their lifestyle.

What trends are hitting the market for orthodontic in 2022? Since this new year has been deemed the “self-care” year, everyone is looking forward to fixing prior problems or finding ways to improve their lifestyle. Whether it from being independent and focusing on yoga to fixing chipped teeth.

The Orthodontic Trends for 2022 are looking for a consumer-direct balance when it comes to a patient’s health. And in this case, teeth are receiving an intensive look this year, especially since the pandemic may have prevented adults from visiting their orthodontist.

CONSUMER ALIGNER KITS

The pandemic has shown that traditional orthodontist appointments are no longer always required to receive care. Consumers who are interested in conducting impressions at home and receiving aligner treatment now can, on their own time. This is an exponentially growing business, and in 2022, businesses are expected to expand their consumer offerings to meet consumer wants, including Star Aligners’ upcoming DIY program to complete treatment from the comfort of home with virtual orthodontists oversight.

ORTHODONTIC SELF-CARE

Prior to the pandemic, there were reports of misaligned teeth causing lower levels of self-esteem. The Zoom effect of staring at one’s face and in turn, teeth all day. This intensified potential low self-esteem issues and contributed to the rise of cosmetic cases in orthodontic care. These numbers are only expected to increase in 2022. According to the ADA, the pandemic has caused a rise in adults visiting orthodontists for stress-related conditions. These stress-related conditions involve teeth grinding and clenching. These conditions cause pain that radiates throughout the mouth, creating a need for retainers or aligners.

TEETH WHITENING RECEIVES A BOOST

Patients can simply go online to discover the hundreds upon thousands of products available for whitening teeth… however, patients should visit or contact their orthodontist first. Why? Even with the mounds of “Best Teeth Whitener” articles, some patients may not be able to use a certain brand. This does depend on the oral health of the patient and it would be wise to contact a professional before applying any whitening gel or strips on deteriorating enamel.

With the focus on social media and constant visibility, there has been an added emphasis on treatments for whiter teeth, especially for those with retainers. According to a recent study, the teeth whitening market has the potential to grow by over 840 million between 2020 and 2024. Patients are seeking gel or foaming products that can be applied directly to the teeth and products for a brighter smile. Non-UV Blue light therapy has also been beneficial in removing stains from coffee, tea, and wine.

LED TREATMENTS

Oral care companies have seen an increased demand from consumers seeking therapy to improve gum function. Patients have been reaching out to their orthodontists to ask what LED treatments can do to help brighten their smiles.

LED devices use red and infrared light to increase gum circulation and improve oral health. These products will become more common, as they are easy to use and beneficial for long-term gum health, including StarAligners’ newest treatment, Illumina. Illumina is an oral therapy system that uses LEDs to enhance gum health, provide teeth whitening, increase circulation, and may reduce discomfort associated with aligner and braces treatments.

2022 IS THE YEAR TO IMPROVE YOUR SMILE

It’s no joke that self-care is in this year. More importantly, patients should always contact their orthodontist before applying any D.I.Y. remedy. No matter how safe a “best of” article may describe the D.I.Y. treatment, it is best to receive a professional opinion, especially when it is the doctor of a patient who has undergone orthodontic care.

Patients should always see their specialist beforehand so that a thorough intra-oral exam can take place. This way appropriate x-rays can help diagnose any problems that may pop up. An orthodontist can evaluate the state of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Since orthodontists are specialists in moving teeth, patients should always consult their professional orthodontist before initiating any treatment.

Achieving Super Elite Top 1% Invisalign Provider Status

It is a thrill and an honor to rank as “Super Elite”—in the Top 1% of Invisalign providers nationwide! What it means literally is that Dr. Eckstein, R.Ph, D.D.S., P.C., and I (Dr. Yusupov) have attended to at least 200 Invisalign patients…

It is a thrill and an honor to rank as “Super Elite”—in the Top 1% of Invisalign providers nationwide!

What it means literally is that Dr. Eckstein, R.Ph, D.D.S., P.C., and I (Dr. Yusupov) have attended to at least 200 Invisalign patients within the past year and have completed over 800 “lifetime” Invisalign cases—in fact we’ve nearly doubled that number with approximately 1500 “lifetime” cases completed. It means, essentially, that we have a growing reputation as the go-to-guys for Invisalign in Brooklyn, Queens and around the Five Towns on Long Island in terms of both quantity and quality. It means we know the ins-and-outs of this procedure, as well as the many variables and nuances that can occur. It means we have worked on the full range of cases—from slightly crooked teeth to severe overbites and crowding. It means that youcan have every confidence in our ability to handle your unique situation efficiently, effectively and successfully. It also means that we can provide you with realistic expectations and prognosis about Invisalign outcomes and treatment times.

In addition to the sheer volume of cases we’ve treated, Dr. Eckstein has the distinction of being an Invisalign ‘pioneer’— one of the initial providers when these amazing clear braces first debuted in 1999. Right out of the gate he knew Invisalign was a winner, and he was right. Fifteen years later it has become one of the most popular and successful ways to straighten teeth today and we have both diligently kept up on the technology and changes along the way.

You may come across to more than one orthodontists offering Invisalign treatment at a discounted price, but it is always better to choose a professional who know how to properly do their job. Our advice is to proceed with caution, ask for their history with Invisalign and if you can speak with past patients. Both Dr. Eckstein and myself have been called upon to straighten out cases that had gone wrong, or where the patient was not happy with the progress or the results. It winds up costing more time and money in the long run. It’s also important to note that less experienced providers don’t always have a full grasp of realistic treatment times for different cases, and tend to underestimate the timeframe for completion.

At the offices of Dr. Eckstein and Dr. Yusupov, we are not only committed to your 100% satisfaction, we have the experience and track record to back it up. With our Super Elite Top 1% Invisalign ranking, we also have the distinction of being recognized in the industry.

If you’re considering Invisalign but want to learn more, schedule your initial consultation at the office most convenient for you. We have locations in Mill Basin, Brooklyn; Forest Hills , Queens; and Cedarhurst, Long Island.

We are committed to creating even more beautiful smiles all over New York.
