Amazing Smiles has put together some great tips for wearing braces!

Braces aren’t so bad once you get the hang of the ropes and learn all of the rules that go alongside having them. First and foremost, it’s important to look at them in a positive light; while braces might feel like a chore, they are really a cool mouth accessory… think about how poppin’ those multi-colored bands look after you attach them to the brackets.

But braces are just the affixed fashion accessory of the summer. They are a positive responsibility, so here are a list of tips and tricks to help make having braces an easier time for newly em-braced.

WEARING BRACES AND TRANSITION

Week one is going to be the toughest part of the transition. The first thing that you’re going to want to do is be careful about what you’re eating after you have your braces put on. It takes a bit of time for your mouth and your teeth to adjust to having the braces in place; during this time its recommended to eat softer foods that won’t cause too much pressure on your new gear. Foods like pasta, yogurts, puddings, soup, and soft vegetables are going to be a go-to for the first few days.

Its not out of the realm of possibility that the brackets might rub the inside of your mouth – specifically the softer tissues inside it – the wrong way. This can lead to sores. Your skin will toughen up over time, but in the meantime, use wax on the brackets to help ease any discomfort. The wax coats the brackets so that the rough metal doesn’t cause any sores. And hey, if your a braces wearing beach bum, that’s going give you good practice during the summer: wax your board, wax your braces!

Rinsing your mouth with saltwater is always a great way to take care of your mouth during that first week of having braces. It seems peculiar, but the salt will help with relieving any of the irritation from the sores – it disinfects the sores and helps them heal just a bit faster. Talk about a three-fer, but there’s no denying that the best thing you can do is practice proper oral hygiene.

That means brushing after meals, cutting back on gummy candies, sodas, and chewing gum, and making sure that food is cleaned out from between the braces themselves. It sounds like a lot of work – and it is – but it builds character. Just like cleaning the grill on your summer ride, it’s always a good practice to make sure your taking care of your teeth and the braces themselves.
